I’m not a massive tennis fan, but I do love to watch a bit of Wimbledon every year.
As I watched it this week, it dawned on me that Wimbledon doesn’t really look as if it has changed in decades.
The uniforms.
The green and purple.
The strawberries and cream.
It all feels wonderfully familiar, doesn’t it?
But here’s the thing: underneath that traditional exterior, everything has changed.
Centre Court now has a retractable roof.
No.1 Court too.
The technology, logistics, and player facilities are cutting-edge.
Wimbledon has moved with the times, but done it so seamlessly.
You almost don’t notice.
And that’s the genius of it.
They’ve modernised, without ever losing their identity.
And that’s exactly what smart retail businesses do.
Has your shop kept pace with the times, while staying true to what makes it special?
Or has it slowly slipped into disrepair without you even noticing?
Because your customers do notice.
The little things matter.
Scuffed paintwork, flickering lights, faded signage.
These details send a message about your standards, whether you mean them to or not.
Big brands wouldn’t let it slide.
And neither should you.
So here’s the reminder:
Sweat the small stuff.
Stay sharp.
Keep on top of the maintenance.
Keep your shop thriving, not just surviving.
Tradition’s great, but only when it's backed up by attention to detail, strategic thinking, and a commitment to staying top-notch.
Just like Wimbledon.
Have a great week.
Mark
